MAYOR’S COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS

The Mayors Community Service Awards were presented this year at Wauconda Fest. The recipients accepted their awards humbly and on behalf of all those that serve our community. The 2007 recipients were:

Deputy Chief Patrick Yost –Patrick has been with the Wauconda Police Department for almost 18 years. He serves on the Board for the United Partnership for a Better Community, the Wauconda Chamber of Commerce, Wauconda’s Police Pension Board and is a Co-Chairman of this year’s Farmers Market for the Chamber of Commerce. Patrick is also President of the Lake County Juvenile Officer’s Association, and serves on the North-East Multi Regional Training Board for Police Education in Illinois. He is the Senior Vice- Commander with our Local American Legion Post 911 and Secretary for the Legion’s newly formed American Legion Riders motorcycle organization. Patrick has been instrumental in the passing of a Village resolution regarding underage drinking which he is also pushing up through the American Legion district and state levels. He served with the United State’s Army leaving as a Sergeant after being decorated for heroism for his part in pulling two wounded civilians from a burning vehicle. He is a lifelong Lake County resident and has lived in Wauconda for the past 7 years and we are honored to present this award to him this evening.

Jim Schwantz - Jim is past president of the Chamber of Commerce. As owner of Acres Group and Bubbles & Suds Car Wash, Jim has instilled the importance of community service within his organization and encourages his employees to volunteer for community events such as Wauconda Fest and the Wauconda Rodeo. Jim has been co-chair of the Chamber’s Rodeo committee and is instrumental in the Annual Street Dance food drive, dedicating his time and resources to collect donated food items from various businesses, organizing the donated items for distribution, and making sure that the food pantry is able to service those in need. Jim has donated many hours to our community, without asking for anything in return. Jim His dedication to Wauconda and its residents is to be commended.

Paul Washburn –Paul is past president of the Chamber of Commerce. As Vice-President of Finance for Acres Group and Bubbles & Suds Car Wash, Paul has also been instrumental in the Annual Wauconda Street Dance food drive to benefit the Wauconda/Island Lake Food Pantry, sharing the many responsibilities associated with this event. With the support of Acres Group, Paul has been contributed in the success of the Chamber’s Arbor Day Tree sale and has also spearheaded the Chamber’s successful Shop, Dine & Explore program, which infused over $10,000 into the Wauconda business community. Paul also chairs the Wauconda Park District’s triathlon volunteer committee, where he is responsible for recruiting and scheduling over 100 volunteers for the 2-day event. Paul’s enthusiasm and generosity has had a positive impact the success of our community and his efforts are greatly appreciated.

Jim Schneider - Jim has organized and planned the Street Dance for the past 4 years and is currently the President of the Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the Wauconda Rotary Club and actively promotes the Village of Wauconda on a consistent basis, volunteering his time for special events at every opportunity. Jim is actively involved with every Chamber event from the Wauconda Rodeo, to the Business Expo, Holiday Walk, Wild West Days and Farmers Market. Jim owns Deven Ventures and actively consults with Wauconda developers on land development, zoning and homebuilding, working with the Village to promote projects that enhance Wauconda’s reputation and economic value.

Sam Martinez –Sam sits on the board of the United Partnership for a Better Community and chairs the Diversity Committee of this organization. Under Sam’s guidance and direction she has been able to partner with the College of Lake County, Wauconda Park District and the Wauconda Library to establish the first family ESL program in our community. Her committee has been responsible for developing a resource guide for the community which will be printed in both Spanish and Polish languages. Sam is a member of the Wauconda CERT program and also serves on the Wauconda/Island Lake Food Pantry Board. She is an active member of the Wauconda Rotary Club, currently serving as Assistant Governor. Sam is Board Director for the following important community-based organizations: the Wauconda Chamber of Commerce, Wauconda Women in Business Council, NISRA, Center for Independent Living in Mundelein, YMCA Camp Duncan, and the Hispanic Coalition Group under the leadership Sandra Moran of District #118. She also serves on various ministries for the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
